Q: We know that soft water is more pleasant to bathe in. Tell us about another advantage to water softening.
Green Water Technologies: In this time of economic stress, it’s nice to discover a way of saving money on everyday items such as laundry or dishwasher detergent. Soft water can provide a way to use half the amount consumers use now, and get clothes and dishes even cleaner.
Q: Has this been studied?
Green Water Technologies: Yes. Two studies were conducted in 2011 by the independent testing firm Scientific Services S/D Inc. and funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation.
Q: What were the results?
Green Water Technologies: They were twofold: First, in washing machines, detergent use can be reduced by 50 percent by using softened water. Additionally, energy savings can be substantial by using cold water instead of hot and achieving the same or better whitening, stain removal and overall cleaner clothes compared to results in hard water.
Q: That’s significant. What was the second result?
Green Water Technologies: In dishwashers, softened water allows detergent to be reduced by up to 70 percent. This result was obtained in areas having very hard water to start with, so the savings were truly amazing.
Q: And does less detergent use have an environmental impact as well?
Green Water Technologies: Absolutely. We see a positive environmental impact by not only reducing energy usage, which means less use of fossil fuels in energy production, but by reducing the influx of harmful detergents into the water stream.
Q: Are there other benefits to soft water?
Green Water Technologies: Yes. Soft water is easier on pipes and appliances, extending the life of both. There just doesn’t seem to be a downside to installing a water softening system such as the Pro Elite. Water softening is an all-around winner.
